- LETTERS, Page 7Two for a Dollar
-
- In the story on state-sponsored lotteries (NATION, July
- 10), we mentioned a popular form of lottery in which a bettor
- picks six out of 54 numbers. We said the odds of getting the
- right six are 1 in 12.9 million. Several readers have pointed
- out that the odds of picking the winners are 1 in 25.8 million.
- We failed to make clear that for the kind of lottery we had in
- mind, a $1 ticket gives the bettor two chances to pick the lucky
- six numbers; in this case the odds of winning on a $1, two-game
- ticket are 1 in 12.9 million.
